In so many ways, she turned out to be a wonderful mother—fun, warm, physically affectionate, enormously proud of me and my sister, and full of praise for everything we did. It astounds me how much courage it took for her to bring up two children as a single mom in those days when families that did not fit the mold were erased or looked down on. And she did that despite the dejection she fought off every day.
