'(oblivion)', by Sophia Jamali Soufi
I have come late
too late …
to the place where lights
shine in no one’s name
where the sound of departure
has faded from the alleys
After a thousand windowless winters
hands still open in greeting
yet the colder world gives no reply
All the promises
one by one
turned into the snow of forgetting
on the shoulders of weary years
I come from a land
where hope, at its last breath
at its final seed
goes out
And shadows
begin to doubt the light
Welcome to the darkness
with eyes
that recall no radiance
and a name upon the lips
that no longer knows
for which voice it must live
Within me
time died
before you ever came …
